6-12 Literacy: Differentiation for Struggling Students

The overall goal of this workshop is to increase each participant’s ability to meet the expectations of the Common Core and Career and College Readiness Anchor Standards for English Language Arts and Content Literacy for ELL, Special Education, and struggling students by focusing on specific ways to differentiate and scaffold instruction. Participants will:

  • Identify the expectations and challenges the common core standards present for ELL, Special Education, and struggling students
  • Explore the most recent common core guidelines regarding differentiation of instruction for ELL, Special Education, and struggling students
  • Engage in hands-on learning of essential strategies for helping students access and respond to challenging text
  • Develop an understanding of differentiation exemplars and “look fors” in a classroom setting
  • Learn to effectively use a differentiated literacy lesson planning template to help students strategically meet the challenges of the common core
